Personal Pet and Home Care vs. "App" Sitters
Disadvantages of using Apps for pet sitting include inconsistent sitter quality, potential safety risks (like lost pets or unvetted individuals), and lack of direct oversight from the platform, which acts only as a connector. Users may experience sitter cancellations, and the platform has limited liability for incidents, often leaving owners to resolve emergencies.
Key Disadvantages for Pet Owners
- Inconsistent Quality/Experience: Sitters range from professional pet sitters to hobbyists, with varying levels of experience, reliability, and specialized knowledge.
- Safety and Security Risks: There are reports of lost pets, neglect, property damage, and theft.
- Minimal Oversight: Rover is a third-party marketplace, not a managed service, meaning they provide limited accountability for, or management of, individual sitters.
- High Turnover: As a gig-economy platform, sitters may be short-term, leading to a lack of long-term, consistent care.
- Last-Minute Cancellations: Sitters may cancel, leaving owners in a bind, particularly during holidays.
- Limited Vetting: While background checks exist, they can vary, making it essential for owners to perform their own in-depth screening and meet-and-greets.
Platform and Cost Issues
- High Service Fees: Both pet owners and sitters are charged fees by Rover (up to 20-30% for sitters, plus additional costs for users).
- Limited Liability: Rover’s terms often state they are not liable for incidents, placing the risk on the pet owner.
- Complicated Pricing: The final cost may not be clear until after initiating contact with a sitter.
Why Personal Pet and Home Care?
Personal Pet and Home Care was founded in 1996 by Debbie Solis in Allen, Texas, at a time when pet sitting was still a relatively new concept and pet owners were beginning to seek alternatives to relying solely on neighbors for pet care.
Today Debbie leads a team of professional pet sitters who are insured and bonded through Business Insurers of the Carolinas, Pet CPR and First Aid Trained and Background checked. Debbie is a Certified Professional Pet Sitter and a Member of Pet Sitters International, National Association of Professional Pet Sitters, and Texas Pet Sitters Association.
