February Pet Holidays

Oet Dental Health Month

Pet Dental Health Month is celebrated every February to raise awareness about the importance of oral hygiene for pets, as dental disease is common and can lead to serious health issues affecting organs like the heart, kidneys, and liver. It’s a reminder for owners to brush their pet’s teeth, provide dental chews, choose appropriate diets, and schedule regular professional veterinary cleanings, often involving anesthesia, to remove plaque and tartar and check for problems.

Dog Training Education Month

February is widely recognized as Dog Training Education Month, a time to focus on teaching dogs essential commands, building their confidence, strengthening the human-animal bond, and promoting positive reinforcement techniques like treats, praise, and toys over punishment for better behavior and safety. It’s a month to educate owners on the benefits of training for their dog’s well-being and to learn from reputable sources, emphasizing that training is an ongoing process beneficial at any age.

National Cat Health Month

February is National Cat Health Month, a designated time for owners to focus on their feline friends’ physical and mental well-being through extra attention to diet, exercise, grooming, and crucial annual vet check-ups to catch hidden illnesses early. It’s an opportunity to ensure cats get proper nutrition, hydration, dental care, playtime, and preventative care like vaccinations and spaying/neutering for a long, healthy life.

Responsible Pet Owner's Month

Responsible Pet Owners Month is celebrated in February, emphasizing the vital commitment to a pet’s health, happiness, and safety through consistent care like proper nutrition, exercise, vet visits, training, grooming, and identification (tags/microchips). While February focuses on all pets, September is also recognized as National Responsible Dog Ownership Month, highlighting specific dog-related duties like socialization and breed-appropriate activities, with organizations promoting the event to foster better owner-pet bonds.

Adopt a Rescued Rabbit Month

February is Adopt a Rescued Rabbit Month, a dedicated time to raise awareness about the large number of rabbits in shelters needing homes and to encourage adoption, as rabbits are often overlooked pets despite being affectionate, intelligent, and suitable for various living spaces. This month highlights that rabbits are a long-term commitment, requiring proper care, space, and socialization, and promotes rescuing them from shelters rather than buying from pet stores.

Spay/Neuter Awareness Month

February is Spay/Neuter Awareness Month, a nationwide effort to promote responsible pet ownership by highlighting the benefits of spaying and neutering pets, which helps control pet overpopulation, improves animal health, and reduces behavioral problems, with organizations running events and clinics to support these goals, including World Spay Day on the fourth Tuesday of February

Celebrate Your Pet This Month

Feb. 2 - National Hedgehog Day, Groundhog Day

National Hedgehog Day is February 2nd, coinciding with Groundhog Day, originating from ancient Roman traditions using hedgehogs for weather prediction before groundhogs took over in North America; it’s a day for celebrating these cute, spiny creatures, raising awareness about their conservation, and promoting care through activities like creating garden habitats, offering food/water, and learning about their importance to ecosystems, as their populations face decline.

Feb. 3 - National Golden Retriever Day

National Golden Retriever Day is celebrated every year on February 3rd, honoring the breed’s loyalty, intelligence, and friendly nature, with people sharing photos, supporting rescues, and celebrating their beloved companions online using #GoldenRetrieverDay. Feb. 7-14 - Have a Heart for Chained Dogs Week

National Pet Theft Awareness Day is observed annually on February 14th, coinciding with Valentine’s Day, to educate pet owners about the risks of pet theft and promote safety measures, as millions of pets are stolen each year and often end up in puppy mills, dogfighting rings, or labs, with few ever returning home. The day, founded by the Last Chance for Animals Organization (LCA) in 1988, highlights the importance of microchipping, secure fencing, supervision, and caution with online sharing to protect pets.
