4th of July Pet Safety and Fun
Safety Tips
Loud Noises:
If your pet has a fear of or an aversion to loud noises:
- Turn on soft music and move your pet into an interior room with no windows
- Use an anxiety vest or try a snugly fitting t-shirt
- Consult your veterinarian about an anti-anxiety medication
- Check on your cat – let him/her hide in a dark, small space
Alcoholic Drinks
Never leave alcoholic drinks unattended:
- Be aware so your pet can’t reach your drinks
- If ingested, the pet could become intoxicated and weak
- Seek vet help if your pet consumes a drink
Sunscreen and Insect Products
Do not apply sunscreen or insect repellent products to your pets:
- Ingestion of products can result in drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst, and lethargy
- Misuse of DEET can lead to neurological problems
Normal Diet
Keep your pets on their normal diet:
- Any change, even for one meal, can give your pet indigestion and diarrhea
- Keep food with onions, chocolate, coffee, avocado, grapes, raisins, and salt out of reach
Matches and Lighter Fluid
Always keep matches and lighter fluid out of pets’ reach:
- Matches contain chlorates, which could potentially damage blood cells and result in severe issues
- Lighter fluid can be irritating to skin and can cause gastrointestinal issues if ingested
- Seek immediate help if your pet shows any signs of distress
Citronella
Keep citronella candles, insect coils, and tiki torch oil products out of reach:
- Some pets will eat anything – never underestimate your pet’s level of curiosity
- Ingestion can produce stomach irritation and other potential issues
- Fireworks contain several types of chemicals and heavy metals. Be pet aware!
