March Pet Holidays

Adopt a Rescued Guinea Pig Month

National Adopt a Rescued Guinea Pig Month is celebrated every March, encouraging people to adopt these social, long-lived pets from shelters and rescues, highlighting their need for companions (often in pairs), proper diets (lots of hay!), and safe habitats, with resources available on sites like Petfinder.

Poison Prevention Awareness Month

March is National Pet Poison Prevention Month, a time dedicated to educating pet owners about common household toxins, foods, and plants that can be dangerous or deadly to animals, encouraging proactive measures to create a safer environment and prevent accidental poisonings, which are common pet emergencies.

Celebrate Your Pet this Month

March 1 - Horse Protection Day

National Horse Protection Day is March 1st, established to raise awareness about horse abuse, neglect, and the plight of “unwanted” horses, advocating for humane treatment, rescue, and adoption, with efforts focusing on issues like slaughter, inhumane training, and supporting legislation like the SAFE Act to end horse slaughter. It’s a call to action for individuals and organizations to support horse welfare through advocacy, donations, adoption, and promoting responsible ownership.

March 1 - National Pig Day

National Pig Day is celebrated annually on March 1st to honor the intelligence and cultural significance of pigs, recognizing them as important domesticated animals through events at zoos, schools, and even “pig parties” featuring pink treats, while also acknowledging their role in agriculture and culture. Created in 1972 by sisters Ellen Stanley and Mary Lynne Rave, it’s a day to appreciate these smart creatures and learn about their contributions, despite controversies surrounding their use for food.

March 1-7 - Professional Pet Sitters Week

Professional Pet Sitters Week (PPSW) is celebrated annually during the first full week of March, established by  Pet Sitters International, to honor dedicated pet care providers, educate the public on the benefits of professional pet sitting, and encourage careers in the field. It’s a time for pet owners to recognize their sitters with appreciation (like tips, gift cards, or praise) and for sitters to network, offer promotions, and highlight their valuable service.

March 3 - World Wildlife Day

World Wildlife Day is an annual UN observance on March 3rd celebrating the world’s wild animals and plants, raising awareness about threats like habitat loss and illegal trade, and promoting conservation efforts, commemorating the 1973 signing of the CITES treaty. It highlights biodiversity’s importance, the benefits wildlife brings, and the urgent need to combat wildlife crime and ensure sustainable use for future generations.

March 4 - Thank Your Pet Sitter Day

Thank Your Pet Sitter Day (TYPSD) is an annual event created by Pet Sitters International, observed on the Wednesday during Professional Pet Sitters Week (PPS Week) (the first full week of March), to honor professional pet sitters and dog walkers with appreciation, with the next being in March 2026. Ways to show thanks include downloading PSI’s social media graphics, recommending them to others, leaving positive reviews, preparing for their visits, and offering gifts like meal vouchers, all while valuing their crucial role in pet care.

March 13 - K9 Veterans Day

National K9 Veterans Day is celebrated annually on March 13th to honor the service and sacrifices of military working dogs (MWDs) and their handlers, marking the 1942 formation of the U.S. Army’s K-9 Corps, with celebrations involving recognizing these heroic dogs, learning their history, and supporting programs for active and retired K9s.

March 15-21 - National Animal Poison Prevention Week

National Animal Poison Prevention Week is the third full week of March, focusing on educating pet owners about toxins like certain foods (chocolate, grapes, xylitol), human meds, and household cleaners, encouraging secure storage and awareness of symptoms (vomiting, lethargy, etc.) to prevent accidental poisonings, with major campaigns by groups like ASPCA and Pet Poison Helpline to help owners know what to do in emergencies.

March 17 - PSI's 32nd Birthday

“PSI” could refer to several different organizations or acronyms. Based on the search results, the 32nd birthday (anniversary) most likely refers to Pet Sitters International (PSI), which will celebrate its 32nd birthday on March 17, 2026.

March 23 - National Puppy Day

National Puppy Day is celebrated annually on March 23rd, a day to enjoy puppies’ joy, promote adoption from shelters, and raise awareness about puppy mills, established in 2006 by Colleen Paige to advocate for orphaned pups and responsible pet ownership. It’s a time for fun, like playing with your own pup, but also serious, encouraging support for rescue organizations over buying from unethical breeders.

March 23 - Cuddly Kitten Day

National Cuddly Kitten Day is celebrated annually on March 23rd, a special day to show extra love to kittens, adoptable young cats, and all feline companions, recognizing the joy and therapeutic benefits of their companionship through snuggles, play, and care. It’s a chance to spoil your own cat with treats and catnip, or visit local shelters to support kittens needing homes, emphasizing responsible pet ownership and adoption.

March 28 - Respect Your Cat Day

Respect Your Cat Day is celebrated annually on March 28th, a day to show extra appreciation for feline companions by focusing on their needs, improving their environment, and deepening your bond through play, quality diet, vet care, and respecting their space and instincts, with origins possibly linked to King Richard II’s 1384 edict banning cat consumption in England. It’s a reminder to honor cats as loyal companions, acknowledging their history as revered animals.

March 30 - Take a Walk in the Park Day

Take a Walk in the Park Day is celebrated annually on March 30th, encouraging people to get outdoors for fresh air, exercise, and nature, promoting physical and mental wellness by walking in local parks or trails, often using #TakeAWalkInTheParkDay on social media to share experiences. It’s a simple, free way to de-stress, improve health, and reconnect with the environment, perfect for walks with friends, family, or pets.
