April is National Heartworm Awareness Month, crucial time for pet owners, vets, and organizations to focus on this serious, yet preventable, disease affecting dogs, cats, and ferrets, transmitted by mosquitoes. Awareness campaigns highlight that just one mosquito bite can cause infection, leading to severe heart/lung damage and potential death, emphasizing year-round prevention, regular testing, and reducing mosquito exposure as key strategies to protect pets. 

National Pet First Aide Awareness Month

National Pet First Aid Awareness Month is celebrated every April, a time dedicated to educating pet owners on providing emergency care for their animals, from minor cuts to life-threatening situations, often promoted by organizations like the American Red Cross  and veterinary groups. It’s a reminder to prepare a pet first aid kit, learn basic procedures like CPR and Heimlich, and know when to contact your vet, especially as outdoor activities increase in warmer weather. 

Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month

April is nationally recognized as Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month, a dedicated time for organizations like the ASPCA and local groups to raise awareness about animal abuse, its signs, and the importance of reporting it, highlighting the crucial link between animal cruelty and other violent crimes. This observance encourages communities to speak up for animals, promote compassion, and strengthen anti-cruelty laws, emphasizing that cruelty can manifest as neglect, injury, or other forms of mistreatment.

Prevent Lyme Disease in Dogs Month

 April is recognized as Prevent Lyme Disease in Dogs Month a key time for pet owners to focus on tick prevention as warmer weather increases tick activity, with May also highlighted for general Lyme Awareness for pets and people as the risk continues. This annual awareness campaign, often supported by organizations like the Lyme Disease Foundation, aims to educate about preventing, identifying, and treating Lyme disease in dogs, caused by the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi transmitted by infected deer ticks. 

Canine Fitness Month

Canine Fitness Month, celebrated every April, is a national awareness campaign focused on combating rising canine obesity by promoting regular exercise, healthy diets, and overall wellness for dogs, encouraging owners to increase activity through walks, play, and training to prevent serious health issues like diabetes, heart disease, and arthritis, strengthening the human-animal bond

National Ferret Day is celebrated annually on April 2nd in the United States, a day dedicated to educating the public about domesticated ferrets, promoting responsible ownership, and dispelling myths about these intelligent and mischievous animals. It’s also a day to recognize their endangered wild relatives, the black-footed ferrets, and to share appreciation for these popular companion animals. 

April 4 - World Stray Animal Day

World Stray Animals Day is an annual event on April 4th dedicated to raising awareness about the plight of stray and abandoned pets, promoting compassion, adoption, and responsible pet ownership, and advocating for humane population control methods like Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR). It highlights the suffering of the millions of homeless dogs and cats worldwide and encourages people to help by adopting, donating, volunteering, or supporting spay/neuter programs. 

April 5-9 - National Raw Feeding Week

National Raw Feeding Week is an annual, week-long event founded by Kimberly Gauthier of “Keep the Tail Wagging” blog to promote the benefits of feeding dogs and cats a biologically appropriate raw food (BARF) diet, focusing on minimally processed meat, organs, and bones for improved pet health, digestion, skin, and energy, celebrated through virtual sharing of experiences, recipes, and tips. 

April 6 - National Siamese Cat Day

National Siamese Cat Day is celebrated annually on April 6th, a day to honor the elegant, vocal, and intelligent Siamese breed known for its striking blue eyes and social personality, often celebrated by sharing photos, showering them with extra treats, and learning more about their history. The day encourages owners to spoil their Siamese cats and provides an opportunity to educate others about the breed or even adopt one from a shelter. 

April 8 - National Dog Fighting Awareness Day

National Dog Fighting Awareness Day is held annually on April 8th,  established by the ASPCA  to combat the brutal, illegal activity of dog fighting by raising awareness, educating the public, and encouraging action against this form of animal cruelty, often linked with other crimes. On this day, organizations urge people to learn the signs of dog fighting (like facial scarring, heavy chains, and matted fur) and support efforts to rescue victims and prosecute offenders, emphasizing that it’s a felony in all U.S. states. 

April 10 - National Hug Your Dog Day

National Hug Your Dog Day is celebrated annually on April 10th, a day to show extra love to your canine companions, though it’s crucial to respect a dog’s body language as not all dogs enjoy hugs; alternatives like belly rubs, playtime, or praise are great ways to connect. The act of hugging can release oxytocin, the “cuddle hormone,” benefiting both human and dog by strengthening bonds and reducing stress, but always check for signs of discomfort like stiffness, whining, or trying to get away. 

 

April 11 - National Pet Day

National Pet Day is an annual observance on April 11th, founded by animal advocate Colleen Paige in 2006 to celebrate the joy pets bring, recognize their role in our lives, and raise awareness for shelter animals needing homes, encouraging people to spoil their pets and support adoption. Celebrations often involve extra treats, toys, walks, social media posts with #NationalPetDay, and donations or volunteering at local animal shelters.
 

April 11 - Dog Therapy Appreciation Day

Dog Therapy Appreciation Day is celebrated annually on April 11th,   recognizing the amazing comfort, joy, and emotional support therapy dogs and their handlers bring to hospitals, schools, and senior homes; while April 11th is widely cited for this specific “Dog Therapy Appreciation Day,”  National Therapy Animal, Day, , established by Pet Partners, is observed on April 30th to honor all therapy animals. Both days celebrate these trained canines for their work in reducing stress and improving well-being. 

April 12 - World Hamster Day

World Hamster Day is celebrated annually on April 12th, commemorating the 1930 expedition by zoologist Israel Aharoni who discovered and brought back the Syrian hamsters that became the ancestors of most pet hamsters today. The day honors these popular, easy-to-care-for pets and encourages owners to celebrate with treats, enrichment activities, or supporting hamster rescues, using hashtags like #WorldHamsterDay. 

Apri 12-18 - Animal Care and Control Appreciation Week

Animal Care and Control Appreciation Week is the second full week of April, designated by the National Animal Care & Control Association (NACA) to honor the challenging work of Animal Control Officers (ACOs) who protect public safety, enforce animal laws, rescue animals, investigate cruelty, and educate communities, often risking their lives as first responders for animals in need. It’s a time to thank these dedicated professionals for their vital role in animal welfare and public health

April 12- 18 - National Dog Bite Prevention Week

National Dog Bite Prevention Week is held annually during the second full week of April, led by the AVMA  and partners, to educate the public on preventing dog bites through awareness of dog body language, proper training, socialization, and responsible pet ownership, especially concerning children and mail carriers. Key efforts include promoting training, socialization, and using resources like the #PreventDogBites hashtag, while the USPS runs separate campaigns in June. 

 

April 17-23 - National Pet ID Week

National Pet ID Week is an annual observance, typically from April 17-23, that serves as a critical reminder for pet owners to ensure their pets have current identification, like updated collar tags and functioning microchips, to increase the chances of reunion if they ever get lost, as millions of pets go missing yearly. It’s a chance to check tags for readability, verify microchip information, and add details like medical needs or travel contacts. 

April 18 - Pet Owners Day

April is packed with pet-related celebrations, but the main ones are National Pet Day on April 11th for general appreciation, Pet Owners Independence Day on April 18th (a fun role-reversal idea), and National Pet Parents Day on the last Sunday in April (April 27th in 2025) to honor dedicated owners, with other days focusing on specific needs like adoption or awareness. 

April 19 - National Cat Lady Day

National Cat Lady Day is celebrated annually on April 19th, a day to honor the special bond between humans (especially women) and their cats, challenge negative stereotypes, and promote cat welfare by raising awareness for shelters and adoption. It’s a chance to share cat love, swap tips, donate to rescues, and recognize the joy, independence, and compassion that cats bring into our lives, moving beyond old clichés to embrace a modern, positive image of cat companionship. 

April 21 - Bulldogs Are Beautiful Day

“Bulldogs are beautiful day” refers to National Bulldogs Are Beautiful Day, celebrated annually on April 21st, a day to appreciate the unique charm, gentle nature, and distinctive looks (like wrinkles and underbites) of these beloved dogs. People celebrate by giving extra treats, buying outfits, posting photos on social media, or attending bulldog meetups, honoring their loyalty, affection, and adaptability.  

 
 

April 20-26 - Animal Cruelty/Human Violence Awareness Week

Animal Cruelty/Human Violence Awareness Week is held annually during the third full week of April, highlighting the strong link between harming animals and violence against people, serving as a critical predictor for domestic abuse, child abuse, and other violent crimes, with a focus on educating communities to report abuse and protect vulnerable individuals and animals. 

April 23 - National Lost Dog Awareness Day

National Lost Dog Awareness Day is observed annually on April 23rd,   a day created by Lost Dogs of America, to bring attention to missing pets, celebrate successful reunions, encourage proactive safety measures like microchipping and ID tags, and remind the public that many “strays” are actually lost dogs with families searching for them. It emphasizes preventing pets from getting lost and offers hope to owners, promoting community efforts to get dogs home safely. 

April 24 - Hairball Awareness Day

National Hairball Awareness Day is an annual observance on the last Frdiay of April (April 25, 2025, for the next occurrence) aimed at educating cat owners about hairballs, their causes (self-grooming), and how to manage them through regular brushing, proper diet, and hydration, highlighting potential health issues like intestinal blockages if they become too severe. 

April 25 - World Veterinary Day

World Veterinary Day (WVD) is celebrated annually on the last Saturday of April, established by the World Veterinary Association to honor veterinarians’ contributions to animal health, human well-being, and the environment, promoting the  “One Health” concept of interconnected health. Each year features a specific theme, highlighting areas like teamwork in veterinary care, and the WVA sponsors an award for the best national campaign promoting the theme, encouraging local events and public awareness. 

April 27 - Free Feral Cat Spay Day

Free Feral Cat Spay Day happens annually around April 27th, a national initiative for Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) to control feral cat populations, with local shelters and rescues (like FixNation, Gulf Coast Humane Society, Greater Good Charities) offering free or low-cost spay/neuter, vaccinations, and ear-tipping; check local SPCA, animal services, and TNR group websites in March/April for specific event details, requirements (humane traps, age/weight), and sign-ups in your area. 

April 29 - International Guide Dog Day

International Guide Dog Day is celebrated annually on the last Wednesday of April, honoring guide dogs and raising awareness for the independence and companionship they provide to people with visual impairments, with ways to participate including donating, puppy raising, spreading awareness, or learning about their critical training. This day celebrates the dogs’ ability to navigate obstacles, prevent dangers, and enhance quality of life, highlighting breeds like Retrievers and German Shepherds, and promoting respectful public etiquette around working guide dogs

April 30 - Adopt a Shelter Pet Day

Adopt a Shelter Pet Day is an annual event on April 30th,  raising awareness for millions of homeless animals and encouraging adoption, fostering, or volunteering at local shelters, with many shelters offering special adoption events, discounted fees (like $10 in Arlington, TX), or programs like “Doggie Daycations” to help pets get exposure and find homes. 

April 30 - National Therapy Animal Day

National Therapy Animal Day is celebrated annually on April 30th, an initiative by Pet Partners to honor therapy animals and their handlers for providing comfort in places like hospitals, schools, and airports, highlighting the human-animal bond and encouraging people to consider becoming therapy teams. The day recognizes various animals (dogs, cats, horses, etc.) that bring emotional, psychological, and physical benefits, reducing stress and improving well-being. 

April 30 - National Tabby Day

National Tabby Day is celebrated annually on April 30th to honor the iconic tabby cat coat pattern (stripes, swirls, spots) and educate the public that “tabby” refers to a pattern, not a breed. Created in 2016 by organizations like the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals, it highlights the distinctive “M” on their foreheads, often linked to legends like Mary marking a cat that kept baby Jesus warm. People celebrate by sharing photos, learning facts (like the four main patterns: mackerel, classic, spotted, ticked), and promoting tabby adoption.
